Trunyan Village is one of the oldest villages in Bali, which is located in the Kintamani sub-district, Bangli Regency, Bali, Indonesia. To reach Trunyan village you need to allow 2.5 hours from Ngurah Rai International airport but it also depends on the traffic.
The name of the village is related to the existence of the Taru Menyan tree in this village. Taru Menyan itself came from two words "Taru" and "Menyan". Taru which means tree and Menyan means fragrant. So Taru Menyan is a fragrant tree that can neutralize the stench from that corpse.

The famous thing about this village is a
unique funeral tradition. The people in Trunyan village don't cremate or bury
someone’s dead body like other Balinese people. When you visit Trunyan Village
you will not see corpses put in crates but all corpses will be left just lying
in a burial place called Sema, and after that, the family members who are still
alive will enclose the body with a bamboo cage.

Actually, all corpses which are put in an
open place will give off a bad odor, but this doesn't apply in the Trunyan
village. Do you know why? It’s because of a Taru Menyan tree. According to
history, the fragrance of The Taru Menyan tree can even smelt up to the Java
area because of its strong fragrance. In the Surakarta palace, there are four
siblings such as three men and one woman. They were very interested and tried
to find the source. In the midst of their journey, they stopped precisely at the foot of
Mount Batur. The princess was interested to stay and decided to live alone
there, she was known as Ratu Ayu Marketeg.

Trunyan village has three types of Sema which are intended with three different types of deaths. Those are Sema Muda, Sema Wayah, and Sema Bantas. Sema Muda is a special burial place for children, Sema Wayah is for people who have grown up and died naturally. And Sema Bantas is for people whose death was not natural, such as an accident, or suicide.

On the journey, you will see the beauty of Lake Batur with a fresh breeze blow over your face and enjoy the great touch of nature. For your information, the ticket prices for crossing the location of the cemetery in the Trunyan village is different depending on the number of people. Rp. 1,000,000 a maximum of 7 people, Rp 900,000 a maximum of 4 people, and 750,000 a maximum of 2 people. The price of a ticket includes the boat rental and the entry ticket.
